-That's HOT-

I think that the role of the media plays a huge part of how people think that they should look on a day to day basis. Everyone typically sees the People magazines in the stores when your checking out, and you normally look at them and criticize how the people on the cover look, or even see what articles are being talked about. The majority of our culture wants to be cool. The trends in fashion really make an impact on everyone. Looking at little kids in today’s society, they look up to some interesting role models. Where it use to be that little boys looked up to their dads, or G.I. Joe, they now look up to professional athletes who are taking performance enhancing steroids. Little girls, who use to look up to their moms, or Barbie, now look up to Paris Hilton or Britney Spears. The more the media shows how Britney Spears latest freak out got what she wanted, why wouldn't little girls think hey if Britney can shave her head and still look good. Then they might be able to do something totally crazy and get away with it and it will be accepted. While the magazines focus in on what's hot this month the youth of this society is following it.

I completely agree with the statements of kids looking up to celebrities and athletes. But I think with good parenting and schooling they will only look at the looks of these people instead of their actions. I don't think it is so much the celebrities and athletes faults for them being looked at as ideals, it's hard for them to help it, but the surrounding and society could be the cause.

The media does a great job of messing everything up. The old fashioned admiration of parents or something totally innocent such as a comic book hero, or a tv character, has turned into the following of people who do not deserve to set the trends.

You have a good ponit about the youth and new role models. Plus, it seems to me that kids today are quicker to pickup on trendy stuff, like kids in elementary school that have cell phones and where makeup etc.

Sure, Our Societies obsesed with self image. I think fundementaly self image is important and we do things to preserve this in order to attract the opposite sex for the purpose of procreation. I think America may have gotten a little too obsessed with self image and our society is very judgemental and has very rigid views of what people should strive to look at.
